THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF JAMES T. KIRK
by David A. Goodman
I wish I’d written this ...
... because it ingeniously and rightfully dismisses STAR TREK V.
I haven’t read a Star Trek novel for decades and have no interest in revisiting them now. However, this "autobiography" caught my eye and after reading the first page I was hooked. The writing style is strictly average but the story of Kirk as told by Kirk is pretty irresistible. I enjoyed it way more than I expected to. I could hear Shatner's ... idiosyncratic. delivery. as I read ... the book. The whole thing could have been much longer and gone into more depth and detail but those faults aside, it is, as Spock would say, "Fascinating." I also really liked how it cleverly dispensed with the risible Star Trek V: The Final Frontier movie, wiping it out of Trek's fictional existence.
From the publisher
THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF JAMES T. KIRK chronicles the greatest Starfleet captain's life (2233–2371), in his own words. From his birth on the U.S.S. Kelvin, his youth spent on Tarsus IV, his time in the Starfleet Academy, his meteoric raise through the ranks of Starfleet, and his illustrious career at the helm of the Enterprise, this in-world memoir uncovers Captain Kirk in a way Star Trek fans have never seen. Kirk's singular voice rings throughout the text, giving insight into his convictions, his bravery, and his commitment to the life—in all forms—throughout this Galaxy and beyond. Excerpts from his personal correspondence, captain's logs, and more give Kirk's personal narrative further depth.
