SAVAGE SEASON
by Joe R. Lansdale

  • I read it between Aug 9 & 11, 2017
  • Genre: THRILLER

I wish I’d written this ...

... because — WOW.

If you put me and Joe R. Lansdale in the same room, I’d be obliged to challenge him to a duel, that’s how deep my professional jealousy runs. Undoubtedly, he’d win it, too, and with consummate ease. Then he’d sit down and write about it and it would be the best description of an English author being humiliated that was ever put to paper. Anyway, SAVAGE SEASON, the first in the Hap and Leonard series, is disgustingly good. It picked me up and so convincingly dumped me into a place I’ve never been that I could pretty much smell the scenery … and the blood. And the two guys wisecracking in my ear, that was real, too. Their friendship is the heart of this novel, and it beats strong and hard and with utter conviction. Fact is, the plot itself is wafer thin and it matters not a damn because, by the end of it, the urge to pick up the next in the series is near overwhelming.

From the publisher

Here comes Trudy back into Hap's life, thirty-six but looking ten years younger, with long blonde hair and legs that begin under her chin, and the kind of walk that'll make a man run his car off the road. Here comes trouble, says Leonard, and he's right. She was always trouble, but she had this laugh when she was happy in bed that could win Hap over every time. Trudy has a proposition: an easy two hundred thousand dollars, tax-free. It's just a simple matter of digging it up ... Hap Collins and Leonard Pine, white and black, straight and gay, are the unlikeliest duo in crime fiction. Savage Season is their debut.
