A SIMPLE PLAN
by Scott Smith
I wish I’d written this ...
... because it is extraordinarily exciting!
Brilliantly written, brilliantly entertaining, brilliantly tense, and the basis for a brilliant movie, A SIMPLE PLAN is the epitome of an unputdownable novel. It depicts a sequence of increasingly violent events in an utterly convincing manner, ramping up the craziness but never overstepping the mark. Every set piece outdoes the one that came before, with the moments of calm leaving you thinking, what the hell can possibly happen next? Yet at the heart of all this, there are very real human emotions. The characters act and react in such an authentic manner that even the wildest scenes make total sense. One minute, your heart will go out to the protagonist, the next, you’ll be thinking, "No! Don’t … don’t … don’t! Oh crap! You did!" No matter his crimes, though, you stay on his side, attached to him by the sadness and helplessness that runs through the narrative. This is a novel that will make you think about cause and effect, about temptation and greed, about weakness and resourcefulness, about the human condition. It’s simply amazing.
