THE SURGEON

I wish I’d written this ...

... because it's thoroughly intriguing.

The first Rizzoli & Isles novel is most notable for the total absence of Maura Isles. In fact, throughout the story, it’s very unclear just who the principal protagonist is meant to be, certainly not Rizzoli, who for much of the story has only a secondary role. In the context of the series, this makes it unusual, but it doesn’t distract from the fact that this is a really exciting and well written story. The medical aspect of it is extremely convincing (Gerritsen is a doctor and brings her knowledge and experience to bear), as is the psychology: the characters are all three-dimensional and jump off the page, their strengths, faults, prejudices, doubts, and interactions all totally realistic. This is efficient, thrilling and insightful storytelling. I was hooked after just a few pages, was left very impressed by the time I turned the last, and am now eager to move on to the next book. I’m interested to see how Rizzoli develops as a character, because in this novel her personality leaves much to be desired, and I’m intrigued by the role Maura Isles will play. What a great start to a series! Loved it.

Closely linked to these killings is Catherine Cordell, a beautiful doctor with a mysterious past. Two years ago she was subjected to a horrifying rape and shot her attacker dead.
